AEE Alternate Curriculum & Community Based Instruction (CBI) Mission Statement

The mission of the Academies of Education and Empowerment (AEE) at Carson Senior High Community Based Instruction Program is to provide leadership, guidance, and supports to students working on the alternate curriculum.  We do this through our focus on Community-Based Instruction, School-Based Enterprises, The Unique Learning System, and The Oxford Picture Dictionary.  We are committed to provide a safe and enriching learning environment as we help prepare students to reach their full potential and contribute to society.

Community-Based Instruction (CBI)

Community-Based Instruction (CBI) is an effective instructional method for teaching, in real-life settings and under the supervision of educators, the skills that students will need for functional daily living as productive adults. CBI helps students develop age-appropriate skills for functioning outside the school environment. Ultimately, CBI prepares students for successful transition to adulthood after graduation, helps students to live independently, and enhances their quality of life. CBI programs are hands-on and are implemented during trips to community locations. Four domains that are focused upon include:

  • Domestic – self care and grooming, wellness, nutrition, cooking, laundry, housekeeping.
  • Vocational – career exploration, employment skills, instructions, rules, schedules.
  • Community – transportation, libraries, shopping, post office, restaurants.
  • Recreation and Leisure – crafts, games, parks, YMCA, bowling, golfing, movies, amusement parks.

Unique Learning System & Oxford Picture Dictionary

Unique Learning System (ULS) is the only online, dynamic, standards-based curriculum specifically designed for students with special needs.  ULS provides instructional targets to bridge between standards and the special education curriculum content for students with special needs and is utilized for students on the Alternate Curriculum.  Instructional targets are aligned to the Common Core Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics.  The Oxford Picture Dictionary is a core reference book that provides special learners and beginning English students to a core vocabulary.
